01

Write the assessment blueprint first

List the topics and cognitive skills the test must cover, then allocate questions and marks. A blueprint prevents over-testing easy facts while missing the skills the result is supposed to represent.

02

Choose question types intentionally

Use objective questions for efficient scoring and descriptive questions when reasoning or written expression matters. Keep wording direct, avoid clues in answer options and include a clear explanation in the question bank when it will support later review.

03

Set time and marking rules

Estimate how long a prepared candidate needs for each section, then add reasonable reading and navigation time. Explain negative marking, partial credit and pass rules before the attempt begins.

04

Preview the real candidate experience

Open the test in the candidate layout on the devices you support. Check instructions, media, keyboard focus, mobile layout, question navigation and the final submission journey.

05

Review every item for clarity and fairness

Ask another reviewer to attempt the test without extra explanation. Remove ambiguous wording, accidental clues and assumptions unrelated to the skill being measured. Check media alternative text and keep shared directions attached to complete question groups.

06

Use evidence to improve the next version

After delivery, review difficulty, skipped questions, answer patterns and candidate comments. A question that behaves unexpectedly may need rewriting rather than a different mark. Keep version notes so future authors understand why an item was retained, revised or retired.
